Step by step guild on how to travel from Lagos to Cotonou by road

To travel to Cotonou from Lagos is very easy as i was disusing above, but if your new and traveling alone for the first time here is what you need to do:

  • Have a means identification, though not compulsory. If you have ECOWAS card your good to go. ECOWAS citizens can travel without a visa for up to 90 days. If you don’t have any no problem.
  • Choose your preferred bus from the list above. ABC Transport, Chisco Transport etc.
  • Most of the buses going to Cotonou are at Jibowu or Mile 2 Lagos, so make sure you locate this parks and book your ticket.
  • Arrive at the terminal at least 30 minutes before the departure time to avoid last-minute rushes.
  • After ticket verification, board the bus with your luggage.
  • Keep your documents (passport, visa, Yellow Card) intact as you may need to present them at the border.
  • The bus will travel towards the Seme border, which is the main border crossing between Nigeria and Benin.
  • The journey from Lagos to Seme border typically takes about 2-4 hours, depending on traffic.
  • Note: Border procedures can take time, so be patient.
  • After border formalities, the bus will continue to Cotonou. The drive from the border to Cotonou is about 1-2 hours.
  • Upon arrival, the bus will stop at its designated terminal in Cotonou. Most of them stop at the same terminal.

My advice

If you have the opportunity to change some Naira for CFA Francs before crossing the border do so for it its saver.

Get a local SIM card or use roaming to stay connected.

Keep an eye on your belongings, especially during border crossings.

Tips to survive in Cotonou

You know English is widely spoken in Lagos, the official language in Cotonou is French. So knowing a few basic phrases in French can be helpful: You can learn this few words:

Returning from Cotonou to Lagos
